interview ZUIDERLUCHT / ZOUT magazine: rubriek ‘DE VOORKEUR VAN... ' (2021)

(ENGLISH BELOW)

Mijn heldin is sopraan Elly Ameling.

David Lynch noemt dat “catching the big fish”.

Boeken ‘Ik heb net Far From the Madding Crowd uit, van Thomas Hardy.

AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF THE ARTICLE ABOVE:

The poetry of small life

During rehearsals for Donizetti's L'Elisir d'Amore, classical singer Bibi Ortjens updates us on her tastes and preferences. Her disarming laugh sounds between every sentence.

Music 'If it came down to which music I would take to a desert island, I would start with German-speaking early, high and late romantic songs. Think Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf and Richard Strauss. My heroine is soprano Elly Ameling. Although I have never met her, I learned from her that this is a non-egocentric genre. It is finely crafted and detailed, one and all poetry. Ameling is someone who puts everything at the service of music. I also love the classical operetta genre, Robert Stolz and Nico Dostal, and 1930s and 1940s swing: Benny Goodman, Glen Miller, Artie Shaw and Tommy Dorsey. When I hear that music, I feel part of history. Not a week goes by that I don't listen to Rowwen Hèze. In his solo work, singer Jack Poels, with his poetry of small life, is at his best. Genres resonate different parts of yourself. The great thing about these days is that you can listen to it all side by side.'

Film/TV/Netflix 'I don't watch TV or Netflix. Not that it's inferior or anything, I don't feel like spending time on it. I love the films of David Lynch and Andrei Tarkovsky. It is poetic cinema where, as in German song art, there is no conscious working towards a goal or product. There is no social or political point of view; you have to dare to trust the subconscious. David Lynch calls this "catching the big fish". If art is not about the spiritual, Tarkovsky said, it is not art. I agree. Art has to transcend individuality and time.'

Architecture 'Whether it's the Charles Vos cour in Maastricht by Charles Vandenhove, or the Maankwartier in Heerlen by Michel Huisman, I love it when architects dare to show optimism, out of love for what they like, and don't go along with the hype. It is the realisation that you are part of a greater whole, of a long tradition in which many people have gone before you. At the beginning of his Reflections, Marcus Aurelius thanks everyone apart from his parents and ancestors from whom he learned something. The idea that we are individuals who all create something new is wrong. It shows arrogance, without tradition, it doesn't work.'

Fine art 'Marc Chagall, Charles Eijck and Charlotte Salomon depicted love without fear of the criticism that their art was figurative. I am a sneaky collector of Charles Eijck, I already have some prints and lithographs. It is not optimistic work, it is true, but I love the local in his paintings, the half-timbered houses, and the draughtsmanship of his paintings. His portraits lack any vanity. I love the work of Fons Haagmans. His depictions of an easel with a guitar or a fox with a songbook are in a long tradition. My mother paints, her house is full of her work. She once dropped out of the academy because it did not allow her to work figuratively. When I first saw Charlotte Salomon's work, I understood what she meant. She is not afraid of the dramatic, not afraid to paint a story. And her use of colour isn't nothing either.'

Books 'I just finished Far From the Madding Crowd, by Thomas Hardy. I read the translation, my friend the English original, that way I could compare. It left me with a renewed love for the Dutch language. It is the observations that make it such a good book. Hardy describes very precisely the psychological changes in the main characters. My mother once read to me from Laura Ingalls Wilder's the Little House series, I still reread the books, about a family moving further and further west. Why? Again, the sense of the lives that have gone before us, here through the descriptions of home life. I read The Bible at the same time as The Bible for Unbelievers by Guus Kuijer. You would think he wrote it to show how things really were; the opposite is true. With Kuijer, even the most unrealistic passages in the Bible come to life. A modern book? Then I choose Harry Potter. Genius. Everything I want to encounter in a fantasy world, I encounter there. Harry Potter is definitely going with me to a desert island.'

Theatre 'When I was asked for Ger Bertholet's theatre monologue MARA, I only then discovered what all comes together in theatre. Due to corona, the play was only performed in September; only 30 people were allowed in the theatre per performance. In Maastricht, I saw a play by Buurttheatergroep Mariaberg, directed by Tamara Jongerden - another example of someone who dares to put her ego aside. The script is based on conversations with local residents, themes such as domestic violence are addressed. It is a moving ode to unpolished human existence.'

1e Knabe      Bibi Ortjens

2e Knabe      Gerben van der Werf

3e Knabe      Tobias Segura Peralta
